There are two types of competitions: Free to Enter competitions and competitions that cost points to enter.
Free comptitions cost you absolutly nothing to enter. That's really all you need to know. The following is a list of all the free competitions:

These competitions cost you some guild points to enter (NOT neopoints!). These are mostly "gambling" competitions (like Buried Treasure and the wheels on Neopets). The following is a list of all the not free competitions:
